pets in the center
There may be, from time-to-time, a small caged pet in a classroom or commons area of the Center supporting a theme or curriculum topic or activity. Parents will be informed in writing prior to any pet being brought into the Center common areas or into a classroom. Cats, dogs, other large pets or animals, and exotic animals are prohibited. Animals are not allowed to roam freely through the Center.
Reptiles, amphibians, turtles, fish, small birds and mammals (i.e., gerbils, hamsters) are permitted, but will not be accessible to children. Any contact between pets or animals and the children will be under the close supervision of a staff member who is close enough to remove the child immediately if the pet or animal shows signs of distress or the child shows signs of treating the pet or animal inappropriately. Children will wash their hands immediately after handling any pet. Only 2 pets per classroom or commons area are allowed (i.e., 2 gerbils or 2 turtles, etc.).
Pets, cages, and feeding dishes will not be located in any food preparation, storage or serving area. Pet and animal feeding dishes will not be placed in areas accessible to children. Any pet or animal on the premises will be maintained in good health and appropriately immunized against rabies. Rabies vaccinations will be documented with a current certificate from a veterinarian. Animals that pose any risk to children shall be restricted from the indoor and outdoor areas used by children.
